KAMPALA, June 14th, 2018 – Centenary Bank, Uganda’s leading commercial microfinance Bank, has today announced its Shs. 70 Million sponsorship for the Masaza Cup tournament 2018. This will be the 14th edition of the competition with the opening match scheduled to take place on Saturday 23th June in Kabulasoke-Gomba while the final shall be played on Saturday 20th October at Namboole stadium.

His Majesty the Kabaka of Buganda, Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II is expected to attend the opening match of the tournament, where Gomba, the defending champions shall be taking on Buwekula in the first of 63 matches.

Football is arguably the world’s most popular sport, joining communities world over. With over 1.4 million customers, which is a quarter of the country’s banking population, this tournament provides Centenary Bank the opportunity to further interact and engage with its customers through the beautiful sport.

A number of national team players have featured in the tournament with the latest being Farouk Miya, who scored the decisive goal in last year’s final. 18 counties in four groups; Busiro, Buvuma, Buluri, Ssingo, Mawokota, Gomba, Bulemeezi, Buddu, Kooki, Kyaggwe, Ssesse, Bugerere, Buweekula, Mawogola, Busujju, Butambala, Kabula and Kyadondo will take part in the eight-week.

Speaking during the media briefing organized by Buganda Kingdom at Bulange Mengo, Centenary Bank Managing Director Mr. Fabian Kasi. “We are proud to be part of the Masaza Cup tournament, and this is reflected in our commitment made last year to sponsor the event to a tune of UGX 210 Million for the next three years, because we believe in the unifying effect of sport. This year we shall be contributing UGX 70 Million as support towards the successful organization of the tournament. Our participation in this tournament is part of our Corporate Social Responsibility to give back to the people of Buganda for having supported us over the years,” said Mr. Kasi.

In line with that, unlike in the previous editions when players summoned to the national U-17 team could not play, the rules have been relaxed to accommodate them this time. Albeit, in this instance, the players who have been summoned to the U-20, U-23, national teams and those with licenses in the FUFA Big League as well top flight division (Uganda Premier League) shall not be eligible.

Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga thanked Centenary Bank for its continued support and generous contribution. “Centenary Bank has been a key partner in developing Buganda Kingdom over the years and its gesture today is testament that it’s here to better the lives of the people. The bank’s contribution will go a long way in ensuring that we hold a successful tournament,” the Katikkiro said.

The Masaza Cup is an annual tournament organised by the Buganda Kingdom intended to identify young promising footballers, develop their talent, while mobilizing the people of Buganda through sports. According to the tournament organisers, last year each match attracted thousands of people from 18 counties of Buganda.
