In 2015, tycoon Hamis Kiggundu popularly known as Ham received a green light from President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to redevelop land on which Nakivubo stadium sits.
To many, this sounded like loose talk.
But former Nakivubo Park Yard vendors have started accessing loans from money donated to them by the city businessman.
Mr. Kiggundu donated Shs100 million to over 1000 former vendors (picture above) to help them reinstate their businesses.
Ham who is the developer of Nakivubo Stadium handed over the money to a representative of Kampala General Better Traders Association representative Rasshid Nadduli at KCCA city Hall last week.
KCCA Deputy spokesperson Robert Kalumba said KCCA has no hand in the lending process of the money and that their role is to only give guidance.
Meanwhile, Baryomunsi Charles the Kampala General Better Traders Association (KGBTA) general manager says the turn up of vendors who are applying for loans is high.
According to Baryomunsi over 200 vendors have applied to get loans.
He however says money is only given to vendors who were operating in park yard market not all vendors on Ham Shopping Mall.
Vendors were evicted early this year to pave way for the re-development of Nakivubo War Memorial Stadium.
Here is the actual rumbling that is ongoing as narrated by one of the unhappy former traders: “You occasion mayhem and colossal loss to Park yard market vendors and then bring mabugo of 100m!!! A typical case of one mocking the bereaved family! And how about the rest of Ugandans whose monumental Nakivubo War Memorial Stadium was alienated? We need to bring this kind of theft should come to an end. Even the construction work that is going on is fake because you are not following what you presented as a plan.”
