Security Minister Henry Tumukunde rushes to Nakasongola to diffuse tension between Buruuli chiefdom and Buganda Kingdom following the burning of the Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi’s Palace.
Unknown people set the palace adjacent to the Nakasongola district headquarters ablaze on almost a week a go but fire fighters and residents were quick to put out the inferno but days later there have been reports of more tension and fights between the rival people.
Care takers of the palace accused some Baruuli people of burning the palace because of their hatred for the kingdom.
There had been rumours that the Nakasongola RDC Apollo Bwebale stopped a meeting organised inside the palace by Buganda chiefs citing security fears after a group of Buruuli Chiefdom loyalists, asked him to demolish it or they would mobilize to ensure it is removed.
Alphonse Ojangole, the acting Nakasongola District Police Commander says that police arrested one person but declined to reveal his identities for fear of jeopardizing investigations.
The Buruuli chiefdom officials protested the construction of the palace in May, saying its presence at Nakasongola district headquarters, which is a stone away from the office of the Isabaruuli Mwogezi Butamanya was a sign of disrespect, provocation and aggression.
There have been attempts by the Police and Resident District Commissioner Apollo Bwebale to engage Buganda and Buruuli chiefdom officials in dialogue to try and diffuse tension over the presence of the palace.
Information minister in Buruuli Chiefdom Samuel Kaweesi says allegations that the Chiefdom had connived with arsonists who set fire on the palace were baseless.
