While attention has been focused on the weekend arrest of Boda Boda 2010 patron, Abudallah Kitatta and others over the death of Case Hospital accountant, Francis Ekulagar, Police’s Flying Squad say they have in custody bodyguards of former Wembley Chief, Brig Elly Kayanja over stealing at from a Chinese sofa company in Nalukolongo, Rubaga Division in Kampala, TheUgandan can exclusively report.
Kayanja’s trusted errand boy and official bodyguards Priv. Agaba Bruhan and Bongomin, his driver Musa Mudde, Abdi Jamil Noon, a Somali national and local teenager and two South Sudanese accomplices on December 19th 2017 raided 2000 Sofa Furniture Company Ltd and put the manager and others at gunpoint before making off with Shs120m, $40,000 (Shs145m) and unspecified amount of Chinese Yuan and Rwanda Francs estimated to be more than Shs50m.
The nine robbers had been monitoring the Chinese company for weeks and had deployed a teenager who took time studying the sales as Christmas drew nearer.
On the fateful day, he alerted them that some big sales had been made and the first three, Abdi Jamil and two South Sudanese accomplices arrived in a red Subaru car disguised as buyers thus got access to the manager’s offices while bargaining before calling Kayanja’s bodyguards to come and finish the mission. The manager was put at gunpoint before surrendering Shs120m to them but they tore apart the premises until they landed on Chinese Yuan and Rwanda Francs and then took off.
Mr. Herbert Muhangi, the Flying Squad Unit commander, said the workers called Police after the thugs had vanished but they managed to make a breakthrough in their investigations that led to the arrest of some of the culprits on December 23 last year.
Flying Squad gathered intel before arresting the boy that led them to the Somali national and later the Kayanja bodyguards being netted.
“We landed on AK47 guns that were used in the robbery and found them with marks of UPDF,’ Mr. Muhangi revealed. An inquiry with the army correlated the firearms to Brig. Kayanja’s bodyguards.
The case file CRB719/2017/Natete is registered at Natete Police station while the suspects are now currently at Kampala Central Police station as Flying Squad wait for the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI) to apprehend Bongomin and other bodyguards who are currently believed to be hiding at Brig. Kayanja’s home in Rubaga.
Brig. Elly Kayanja is much remembered for the y execution of Operation Wembley, which saw the arrest of criminal gangs that had caused mayhem across the country.
