Besigye can bring to end military dictatorship says Mayor Lukwago

Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago is confident opposition leader Kizza Besigye’s defiance campaign can end what he termed as “dictatorship and militarism” in Uganda.

Lukwago was on Thursday telling the story of Democratic Party, one of the oldest parties in the country and why having weathered the storm of the last 62 years was something to write home about.

“There are reasons to celebrate. The party was founded on the right ideals,” he said while appearing on “NBSFrontline” programme.

According to Lukwago, even President Museveni in his book “Sowing the Mustard Seed” confessed he was once a DP member.

“However, we need to examine why power has eluded DP in the last 62 years.” Lukwago said although parties are formed to capture power, given the current situation, opposition parties can’t take power on their own.

“We need to coalesce behind particular forces. We are faced with a situation where Museveni is entrenching militarism and dictatorship. We have to take the bull by its horns.”

Lukwago revealed that Museveni is focused on 2021, the brought a minister who has declared herself the chief mobiliser [Kampala minister Beti Kamya] and is buying off opposition.

“Museveni is not championing a development agenda in Kampala. He is preoccupied with power longevity.”

Lukwago said although he subscribes to the Democratic Party (DP), he also believes in Dr Kizza Besigye’s defiance  to end the era of dictatorship and militarism.
