The beginning of the school year has been mired by tragedy on Wednesday when scores of scholars, were killed in a minibus taxi accident in Mabira forest at Najjembe along Jinja-Kampala highway.

The ages of the children was not immediately known. The incident, which police attributes to over speeding, occurred at around 2.30pm

The accident involved a trailer reg. no. UAY 8949G/UAU 6505 and a commuter taxi reg. no. UAZ 350U.

According to Mr Fred Ssemusu ,an eye witness, the accident occurred when the trailer which was coming from Kampala collided head-on with the taxi from the opposite direction.

The force of impact sheared the taxi in half, and pushed it to the roadside.

Good samaritans and villagers scrambled to stabilize the children, working in amidst the bodies of the dead with a traveller, Emma Masumbuko telling TheUgandan, “..all are dead and bodies hanging in windows. Students reporting to school among victims. lost courage to take  a photo.”

Officials from the Uganda Police, Lugazi  were at the scene to initiate an investigation into the crash.

May all RIP.
