Why Anti-Terrorism Police has besieged Nakasero mosque

Government is contemplating closing off Nakasero Mosque in Kampala over terrorism related issues.

Tuesday morning, security agencies lead by Joint Anti-Terrorism Task Force (JATT) have raided and plundered the Mosque on Plot 4 Snay bin Amin Street in Kampala.

Police spokesperson Mr Andrew Felix Kaweesi confirmed the incident saying police conducted the search and Mr Habib Buwembo, one of the spokespersons at Nakasero said documents, computers, motorcycles and Shs50 million for the ongoing construction of Umah house among other things are also missing.

Kaweesi confirmed that some people were arrested from the Mosque and are under police custody.

TheUgandan understands that the raid is connected to the murder of Sheikh Major Muhammad Kiggundu several people including Muslim clerics have been arrested as police continue to search for the killers.

Tension has been high at Nakasero mosque since top clerics from the mosque were arrested in connection to the killing of Sheikh Kiggundu. Police picked up the acting Amir Ummah, Sheikh Yahaya Mwanje days after the murder of Kiggundu for interrogation into possible connection with the killing. The arrest of Sheikh Mwanje and his team came at a time the Amir Ummah Sheikh Muhammad Yunus Kamoga and several leaders of Jamat Dawatil Salafiya are facing trial in the International Crimes Division in the High Court for the murder of several Muslim clerics.
