Makindye West Member of Parliament Allan Ssewanyana has been given Police bond so as to appear before the police Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to answer to allegations of offensive communication and inciting violence.
Mr. Ssewanyana says he rejected the bond and asked to be detained and taken to court but the officers declined.
The youthful legislator was arrested by Police on Monday blocked officers from transferring youths under the Jobless Brotherhood claiming they were his electorates.
The youths staged demonstrations in the city against amendment of article 102 (b) of the constitution.
Dressed in white track suits, the youths carried public address systems and whistles while condemning lifting the presidential age limit. Police swung into action and arrested the group.
“We had to arrest him for obstructing the work of police, ” said Kampala Metropolitan Area spokesperson Emilian Kayima.
War of words
Police yesterday summoned Mr. Ssewanyana and fellow Members of Parliament (MPs) Mohammad Nsereko, Monica Amoding, Theodore Ssekikubo and Banarbas Tinkasimire to aid investigations on their alleged offense.
The summoned MPs addressed a news conference recently and vowed not to support the push for amendment of article 102(b) of the constitution to lift the age limit for running for president.
Speaking to press at Kibuli CID headquarters, Hon. Nsereko said they won’t be intimidated by partisan people.
“Our freedom of expression is enshrined in the constitution. I don’t know why police are much concerned with what we say. But we are standing our ground no matter what,” Nsereko vowed.
He said their colleagues who have everything including the support of the army are scared, wondering what makes them [pro-age limit NRM MPs] panic.
Aruu County MP, Odonga Otto on his part said CID decided to separate Nsereko and Ssewanyana. “I will be handling the statement of Ssewanyana”.
Police ordered the MPs to return to the CIID headquarters in Kibuli after two days to be interrogated further. Thursday is the very day that the amendment bill is scheduled to be tabled on the floor of parliament.
