Members of the Acholi Parliamentary group have convinced the family of Kenneth Watmon Akena, the slain child activist who died under questionable circumstances in a Kampala shooting a week ago to hire private investigators to probe his death.

Gilbert Olanya, the Kilak South County Member of Parliament, told the TheUgandan the family was not happy with the position taken by the Police or the way they were handling the investigations regarding to the circumstances that led to his death.

The private investigator, whose identities were not readily available to our reporter, met the family over the weekend with the help of members of the Acholi MPs to discuss the terms of the assignment.

The legislators are meeting most of the costs.

“Yes, it is true we hired a private investigator and with the help of my colleague Hon. Odonga Otto, the PI met with the family to sort out some issues first,” Hon. Olanya said.

“There are so many things lacking in the Police explanations, which only lead to suspicion that somebody somewhere was attempting a cover up for reasons known only to them,” he added.

“Right now everything is going on with our private eyes because we don’t trust the Police investigations at all.

Key suspects in Lugogo shooting Matthew Kanyamunyu and his girlfriend Cynthia Munywangari have been charged with murder. Kanyamunyu’s brother, Joseph was jointly charged. The trio was remanded to Luzira Prison until December 6, 2016 by Grade One Magistrate, Noah Ssajjabi.

Matthew Kanyamunyu, the chief executive officer of Quantum Express Logistics, has since last Saturday been held on suspicion that he shot Akena, aged 32 years. However, Kanyamunyu claims he only helped Akena to take him to hospital as a Good Samaritan.

Akena, a community development officer with a local non-governmental organisation, was shot in the stomach and he died on Sunday at Norvik Hospital located on Bombo Road in Kampala.

He was laid to rest last Wednesday at Gang Diang in Kitgum Municipality. During burial also attended by the Inspector General of Police, Gen. Kale Kayihura, Akena’s relatives and friends asked the police chief to ensure that justice is served.
