President Museveni has again shook up the army leadership.
In the latest changes announced Friday morning, the UPDF spokesperson Lt Col Paddy Ankunda has been replaced by Brig Richard Karemire, formerly deputy CMI boss.
UPDF chief political commissioner, Col Felix Kulaigye has also been replaced by Col Henry Matsiko, formerly working under president’s office.
Col. Michael Kabango promoted to Brig. and appointed 5th Division Commander. He replaces Sam Kavuma who has been appointed Deputy Commander, Airforce.
Nakibus Lakara has been appointed commander, rapid response center while Brig. George Igumba has been appointed Chief of Personnel.
Col. Chris Bbosa has been promoted to Brig. and appointed Dep. Commander, Senior Staff College while Brig. Proscovia Nalweyiso is the first woman to gain the rank of Major General.
Earlier on Tuesday, Gen. Museveni transferred his eldest son Maj Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba to become a special presidential adviser. Gen Kainerugaba, 42, had been in charge of the Special Forces in charge of his father’s security since 2008.
In the reshuffle Brigadier Peter Elwelu, who oversaw a deadly raid in November on the palace of a regional king accused of launching a secessionist movement, was promoted to army chief.
His promotion is being seen as a reward for the operation, in which more than 60 people were killed. Brig. Paul Lokech has been appointed Commander Second Division, replaces Peter Elwelu.
The previous army chief General Katumba Wamala has been made a junior Minister for Works in the government after serving as the top army official since 2013, a departure seen as a demotion.
