The police commissioner in charge of media crimes has been arrested and detained at the central police station in Kampala over extortion of Shs40m.

Emmanuel Mbonimpa is said to have extorted Shs40m from an Indian businessman.

A senior police source familiar with the case told the Ugandan that Mponimpa’s arrest came after the Indian businessman narrated the story to the Inspector General of Police Gen Kale Kayihura earlier this week. The IGP then ordered the arrest of Mbonimpa together with unspecified number of his junior officers under his docket.

To be quizzed

According to a knowledgeable police source, Mbonimpa will appear before the Professional Standards Unit (PSU) in Kireka for interrogation.
