Three senior security officers, including a senior police officer and an internal security agent have been arrested and detained in connection with an armed robbery in Makindye Division, Kampala.
The security operatives were in the company of a Bukedde TV journalist, Joseph Setimba.
The suspects, including a cadet police officer, Mr Kasim Kakembo, also the officer in charge of Ggaba Police Post, Mr Richard Kwerima, an Internal Security Officer of Ggaba parish, Mr Andrew Mukisa, a probation police constable, Mr Setimba, a journalist attached to state run Vision Group and four others reportedly robbed Shs4m from Sea Food Ltd, a Chinese owned fish company.
The other suspects include Mr Juma Isabirye, who reportedly postured as a fisheries inspector from Kampala Capital City Authority and Mr Emma Matovu, who had identified himself as an operative from State House. They were being driven in an Ipsum car by a one David Mukasa who is also in police custody.
The Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Mr Emilian Kayima, confirmed their arrest, saying all but one suspect is still on the run.
“We have seven of the suspects in our Kabalagala Police cells, except one of them Kwerima, the GISO of Ggaba parish, who is still on the run,” Mr Kayima told crime reporters in Kampala.
How it happened
According to police, the suspects attacked the fish factory located at Ggaba Kawuku between 1pm and 4pm on Monday and forced their way in, putting the factory manager, a one Chenrensin, at gunpoint. “We recovered the money that had been stolen [Shs4m], a gun and a car that had been used in the robbery,” Mr Kayima said.
