The main Gulu Police station has arrested a 30-year old woman, Atimango Beatrice, for stealing a baby from his mother.
It was alleged that Atimango also knowned as Lakot drugged the mother of the two-year old boy and disembarked while the victim was sleeping after a bus journey from Kampala to Gulu on Sunday.
The Gulu District Police Commander (DPC), Martin Okoyo told TheUgandan that Lakot was arrested by officers after a tipoff by one of her concerned neighbours in Senior Quarters, Laroo Division in Gulu Municipality who know her as not being a mother for years.
Okoyo added that the family unit of the station, acting on intelligence, rescued the baby and are currently looking for the real mother to reunite them.
Confessing to the crime, Atimango Beatrice Lakot, said she had been trying for over ten years without giving birth to a child and had become desperate to have a baby.
She, however, denied drugging the mother of the baby.
DPC Okoyo said: “After being apprehended, she (Atimango) confessed and confirmed to us (Police) that she stole the child so I argue the general public to be careful especially mothers not to trust anybody when traveling by public means like bus and taxis.”
Okoyo said, says Atimango is to be subjected to a mental checkup before she is charged with aggregated human trafficking.
He said that acts of children stealing are rampant in Gulu district and other neighbouring districts saying that Atimango’s arrest should serve as forewarning for those who are willing to commit the same.
