The Inspector General of Police has defied president Museveni’s orders to free innocent Kasese attack suspects.
The police chief has instead dismissed the president’s directive insisting that none of the said suspects is innocent.
Gen Kayihura says that all suspects were screened by the security agencies before they compiled a list of those currently being tried at Jinja Chief Magistrate’s Court.
“Security agencies have evidence linking all the suspects to the conflict.”
The suspcts face treason, murder, terrorism and aggravated robbery charges.
Media reports indicate that president Museveni, through his advisors on Rwenzori matters had directed security agencies to screen the suspects so that innocent ones could be immediately released. But Gen Kayihura denied any knowledge of such a directive from his boss.
“…I am not aware of the directive. I heard about it through the media. I don’t think that is true because all suspects have been screen and linked to Kasese clashes,” Gen Kayihura said on Wednesday at a press conference.
Crime scene
Gen Kayihura also says that security forces will not leave the Rwenzururu palace because it is still regarded as a scene of crime.
The police boss says there is more evidence that is still being collected from the palace by the investigators, to be used in the court processes.
Background
At least 100 people were killed while several were severely injured in the Kasese clashes when Rwenzururu royal guards clashed with government security agencies. This further resulted into the imprisonment of the Rwenzururu king Charles Wesley Mumbere and his dozens of his subjects.
