In July last year the whole nation was shocked at the gruesome murder of a 19-year old Desire Mirembe who was raped, murdered and her body dumped in a sugarcane plantation in Lugazi. Mirembe was doing language therapy at Makerere University.
The Police investigated and concluded that her boyfriend Mathew Kirabo was responsible for her death. He was detained and is still on remand at Luzira prison.
After a gruesome interrogation, Kirabo admitted to have raped and murdered Mirembe thereafter dumping the body. He willfully took police to the scene of crime.
The Principal Judge Yorokamu Bamwiine directed the file to be transferred to Mukono High Court and the case was scheduled to take off on January 6, 2017.
Jinja High Court trial judge Lady Justice Eva Luswata early this month quashed Kirabo’s bail application and advised his sureties to file their documents in court for verification.
In an exclusive phone interview with Mirembe’s father Emmanuel Musoke, he said that he wants justice for his late daughter.
“I was in court when his lawyer presented bail application and I was totally shocked because the reasons they raised are vague,” Musoke said bitterly.
Kirabo is doing medicine and his lawyer told court that he had asked for a dead year and if he does not return to school by January, he will be discontinued.
However, Musoke notes that Kirabo is just 23 years old who doesn’t have any responsibility or illness that can stop him from being in prison until the case is settled.
“He wants bail to continue with his studies and achieve his dreams! Does he think my daughter never had aspirations in life?,” Musoke asked angrily.
The whole country is waiting for the outcome of the January 6 2016 bail application, as in previous murder cases some of the accused have been granted bail despite the gravity of their crimes.
Just last month, the trial judge Masalu Musene granted bail to Ivan Kamyuka, the man who murdered Johnie Ahimbisibwe at Guvnor Nightclub and there were publications in local tabloids of him having fun in Sweden!
In 2013 Justice Lameck Mukasa granted bail to city businessman Desh Kananura, the prime suspect in the murder of Badru Kateregga, who was Kananura’s employee.
Musoke is of a view that when court grants Kirabo bail, it will be indifferent from the two above mentioned cases.
