One of the remaining groups of Rwenzururu King Mumbere’s Royal Guards have been offered amnesty by government.
The Rwenzori East Police Commander, Mr Agapitus Ecotu said on December 23 announced that a total of 167 Rwenzururu Royal Guards have so far surrendered to security agencies in Kasese.

The security forces say that 165 came from Bukonzo West constituency while two came from Kasese Municipality and amnesty is only for those who never participated in the killing of security personnel and other criminal acts in the region.
Over 100 people including police officers and the Rwenzururu royal guards were killed in the Rwenzori violence that climaxed with a joint operation by the UPDF and police onto the Omusinga Charles Wesley Mumbere palace.
This month, Mumbere and 161 Royal Guards were presented with a list of 41 counts of crimes allegedly committed between March and November 2016 within the Rwenzori region. The suspects include 19 women and four juveniles.
The other charges include terrorism, murder, aggravated robbery, attempted murder and malicious damage to property.
Prosecution alleges that Mumbere and his co accused persons, between March and November 2016, at diverse place within Kabarole and Kasese districts, contrived a plot to overturn the government of Uganda by use of arms.
Mumbere was subsequently charged with Murder and remanded to Kirinya Government Prison until yesterday when he was charged with Terrorism and sent to Luzira prison.
The suspects have been distributed to Bugungu Prison, Kirinya, and Luzira prison. The juveniles were sent to Naguru Remand Home. They all return to court on December 28.
