Makerere University Academic Staff Association (MUASA) has suspended strike following vote by lecturers in which 81 lecturers voted for suspension of the strike and 56 voted for its continuation but with a clear grace period.

The suspension of the strike comes after today’s meeting which was chaired by MUASA executive chairman Dr Muhammad Kiggundu. “If they do not clear our incentive arrears by February 2017 as promised, we will resume the strike,” said Dr Kiggundu backed by the lecturers who attended the meeting.
The lecturers who were paid one month’s incentives last week still demand upto 8 months of unpaid arrears.
The suspension of the strike comes at a time when the President, who closed the institution, said it is the willingness of the lecturers to teach that will have the university reopened for business.
On November 1, President Museveni ordered for the indefinite closure of Makerere University following failed negotiations between the university council, management and striking staff over their unpaid salary incentives for eight months.
