Muslims of the Tabliq community today gathered at Nakasero mosque to resolve on who to replace Sheikh Yahaya Mwanje who was arrested on Sunday in connection to the murder of Major Mohammed Kiggundu, the 10th muslim cleric to be murdered in three years.
Sheikh Mwanjje replaced Sheikh Yunus Kamoga who currently in High Court over murder of several other Muslim clerics in the last four years.
An audio that emerged just an hour after the killing, narrates the slain Sheikh’s story a week before the gruesome incident.
In the audio, the deceased (Kiggundu) said that there was a plot being masterminded by Yahya Mwanje to convince Muslim clerics in Luzira including Kamoga to accept that they have been killing fellow colleagues.
According to Kiggundu, the plot was primarily targeting him and a week later he met his death. However, Police spokerspon Kaweesi on Sunday declined to divulge information about where Mwanje was arrested and where he is currently detained. Some sources indicated that he was arrested at one of the mosques in Busaabala, another Kampala suburb, after the morning prayers on Sunday.
“He is in our custody. And that is the most important thing now. We will update you as and when we get more suspects,” Kaweesi said.
The police spokesperson explained that Mwanje was arrested on account of the ‘utterances he made’ against some Muslim leaders, including Kiggundu before he was gunned down.
