KCCA’s enterprising midfielder Paul Mucurezi has been named among the few locally based players Uganda Cranes coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic said will this week start be giving a chance to show mettle and claim spots on the plane to the 2017 AFCON Finals
The Serbian tactician has Monday named a 25-man squad for 4 non residential training sessions on 23rd, 24th, 27th and 28th November, 2016. It is composed of players who were supposed to feature in the CECAFA Senior challenge Cup that still hangs in balance.
Mucurezi is the only newcomer named by Micho in a 25-man squad notable for Tony Mawejje’s inclusion despite the aging midfielder’s lethargic display during the 2018 World Cup Qualifiers against Congo Brazzavile at Mandela Stadium, Namboole recently.
Brian Majwega’s continued decline has opened up another space in midfield and Mucurezi’s inclusion continues the climb of a player who began his career at Kigezi High School in Kabale and had never played in the top League until joining KCCA from Mutundwe Lions about two years ago. “I think he’s in outstanding form,” Micho said. “It’s a fantastic journey that he’s been on, from non-league to an international call-up.
Micho, who will explain his thinking at a press conference on Wednesday, has kept to his promise of selecting Kizito Keziron even though his displays at Uganda Premier League side Vipers have hit rock bottom all year.
The provisional squad to the Gabon finals will be unveiled on Wednesday and will accommodate most of the foreign based stars.
