Here are facts about the heist that you might not have known:
- Evalisto Mucunguzi, the manager for Nyarwanya Savings and Credit Cooperative Society (Sacco) in Ruhinda sub-county in Rukungiri district is on the run after allegedly embezzling Shs 600 million from the group.
- Mucunguzi is alleged to have withdrawn the money and disappeared with all the savings belonging to over 1,264 members. Currently the Sacco has only Shs 50,000 left on the account.
- Justus Muganzi, the Sacco chairperson says they discovered all was not well when they realised that the Sacco no longer had enough savings to lend money to its members.
- Muganzi says that after auditing the Sacco books of accounts, they found out that Shs 600 million was missing.
- He says that the manager forged signatures before withdrawing the money. Muganzi adds that the manager has been missing for a week and his known phones all remain switched off.
- Richard Emuna, the Rukungiri District Police Commander also confirmed that Mucunguzi is missing, but added that police is hunting for him.
- He says that Mucunguzi would face charges of embezzlement and forgery once arrested.
- Martin Mugabi, the Rukungiri Resident District Commissioner says that the habit of embezzling Sacco money by the top officials is now common in district. Mugabi says that Mihenvu Sacco in Nyakishenyi sub county, Kubumbu Sacco Bwambara sub county , Mpororo Sacco in Kebisoni sub county have already closed after their managers swindled savings money for members.
In April this year, Boaz Byaruhanga, the manager of Kebisoni Sacco in Kebisoni sub-county was arrested for embezzling over Shs 150 million.
