Buganda Road Court has ordered the former Old Kampala DPC Joram Mwesigye to defend himself against charges of assaulting a WBS TV journalist Andrew Lwanga.
This after Presiding Grade one magistrate Gladys Kamasanyu perused the evidence of the 6 prosecution witnesses and found it sufficient to warrant ASP Mwesigye defend himself.
The State contends that on January 12, 2015, at Florida bar and guest house on Namirembe Road in Kampala, Mr Mwesigye brutally assaulted Mr Andrew Lwanga, a journalist working with WBS Television and Mr Joseph Ssetimba from Bukedde Television. Mr Mwesigye is charged with three counts ranging from assault, occasioning bodily harm and malicious damage of property.
Investigators with Professional Standards Unit arrested Mr Mwesigye on January 13, 2015, after his brutal attack on journalists who were covering a demonstration by the unemployed youth group.
To date, Mr Lwanga is still nursing spinal injuries he sustained from the lashes by the police officer.
Magistrate Kamasanyu ordered that Mwesigye who is out on bail should be ready to give his defence on the 7th December 2016.
