Treason suspect, Dr. Kizza Besigye, the former Forum for Democratic Change-FDC party presidential candidate has Tuesday told the Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s court he will will never report back for mention of the case beyond the next adjournment date of January 25 2017.
During the court session, the State Attorney Carol Apiya told Noah Ssajjabi, the Nakawa Grade one magistrate that investigations into Besigye’s case were still ongoing. She asked court to adjourn the matter to another date to allow the prosecution to wind up its investigations.
This angered Besigye who attacked the DPP Mike Chibita for failing to find evidence against him for the last six months to enable his case be sent to the High court for trial.
“After six months, this case is not committed to the high court. I just want to put it on record since this court has no power that the DPP should be ashamed of himself to persecute citizens in this way. I pray that next time this case is heard or fixed if it’s not committed that I will not come back to court.” an agitated Besigye told court.
Moments later, Besigye confronted police, resulting in a standoff that has brought activity on Kampala Road to a standstill.
He was arrested and briefly driven to Kira Road police station, before being taken to Kira Division under heavy police escort.
Besigye claims that his multiple arrests and subsequent treason charges sought to prevent him from lodging a legal challenge against Museveni, who has been president since 1986.
