Uganda Cranes return to second position of 2018 Fifa World Cup qualifying group after their opponent Egypt destroyed three-time participants Ghana 2-0 to reclaim top position on the table on Sunday evening.
Farouk Miya was once again Uganda’s hero as the Standard Liege forward’s first half strike earned Uganda a 1-0 victory over Congo Brazzaville at Namboole on Saturday to momentary go top of Group E with four points but are now bettered by the North Africans on six.
A first-half Mohamed Salah penalty and a late goal from Abdallah Saied guided Egypt to a 2-0 victory over Ghana in their World Cup qualifier on Sunday.
Egypt, who won 2-1 in their opening match in Congo last month, sit firmly on top of Group E with six points while Ghana are now at serious peril of failing to qualify with just four more games to come.
Ghana full-back Harrison Afful brought down Mahmoud Trezeguet in the box two minutes before the break and Roma forward Salah made no mistake from the resulting penalty, calmly converting into the middle of the goal.
Congo-Brazzaville who have lost twice so far are the basement boys of the group with no point.
Just four more games to come
The next round of games will start on Monday 28 August 2017 when Uganda hosts Egypt at Namboole as Ghana welcomes Congo to Accra or Tamale depending on where they decide to host from.
On Saturday 02 September, The Cranes will play the group leaders in Alexandria as the Congolese hope to pick their first home points against Ghana at the Stade Alphonse Massamba-Debat in Brazzaville.
The match days during the first week of October will see Ghana return to their ‘graveyard’ Namboole to play Uganda as Egypt look to do a double on Congo before the climax in November that has Uganda travel to Brazzaville and Egypt finishing the qualifiers away against Ghana.
The group winner will make it to Russia.
