Police use live bullets to disperse violent vendors
Police on Tuesday morning used fired live bullets as violence engulfed downtown Kampala during running battles between street vendors and KCCA enforcement officers with cops as they try to enforce government directive to get vendors off the streets.
The evictions continue after Kampala Minister Beti Olive Kamya’s directive, to have all street vendors evicted from the city, a move she said, would restore sanity in the city. The vendors who insist that as ordinary people they also want to earn a living in the city become violent and Police was forced to disperse them.
By press time, enforcement officers and police were busy evicting the vendors from the streets with excessive beating and arrests being effected.
The exercises continued on the streets which have been accommodating vendors and were by Monday after clear include Namirembe road, Nakivubo Mews, Luwum Street, among others.
On Monday KCCA council chaired by Lukwago resolved to gazette particular streets among them Nakivubo Mews, Nakivubo Road, Allen Road and Kafumbe Mukasa Road on which vendors can be left to operate.
Further, the council resolved to introduce license fees for all the vendors who will register with KCCA to operate their businesses.
