Heavy military deployment were seen early Wednesday morning and afternoon in the flashpoint district of Kasese as Rwenzururu Kingdom marks the 50th anniversary of Omusinga Charles Wesley Mumbere’s coronation.
In March, Kasese was a hotbed for tribal killings and security operatives were deoployed there in thousands to try calm the situation in Hima town where atleast fifteen people were killed, some in skirmishes with police, while houses have been torched in other instances.
In the municipality today, Uganda Radio Network reporters said Security minister, Lieutenant-General Henry Tumukunde had on Tuesday met with Mumbere and maintained a noticeable presence.
URN said, in the meeting held at Margarita Hotel in Kasese Municipality, Tumukunde clarified on the deployment in Kasese.
In a closed-door meeting Gen. Tumukunde is said to have assured the Omusinga that the state will provide all necessary security to make sure that the 50th coronation event is held successfully.
While government formally installed Rwenzururu king in 2009, Omusinga Mumbere traces his coronation date back to October 1966 when his father died and named him as his heir. A low-key ceremony was held in the Rwenzori Mountains at which Mumbere was installed.
Tumukunde told the media shortly after the meeting that he has agreed with the Mumbere on all security means to ensure that Kasese is peaceful.
