A team of Baganda lawyers and other professionals in 4 countries and ranging in age from 31 to 68 have told BugandaWatch that in July 2016 they launched an investigation in the never ending court cases that seem designed to make the Kabaka of Buganda look like a heartless law breaker. The message came in an email from Mr. S. Kiwanuka that stated, “In 2011 we created an email discussion list of a few lawyers to discuss Uganda news stories with legal implications. In 2013 we were so shocked by the quality of legal advice that Kabaka Mutebi received before signing that outrageous and illegal MOU with Mr. Museveni. It became the match that pushed our group (now on Whatsapp) to focus only cases and agreements that affect Buganda and Kabaka.”
Mr. Kiwanuka’s email goes on to say, “We now have lawyers, economists, and others in our group. That is why in July we formed two focus research groups. One is investigating the 2013 MOU that Kabaka Mutebi allegedly signed Museveni and the other is trying to identify the root causes of the never ending court cases against Kabaka Mutebi in Uganda courts.”
Although Mr. Kiwanuka provided information on the 14 group members (BugandaWatch demanded it), he requested that only his name be published, with the initial of his given name. He explained, “We shall be professional in our research and present our results in simple layman’s language. However, we know that if our names go public now, some propaganda machine will try to divert attention from our findings by accusing us of being disloyal to Kabaka or Namulondo.”
