Buganda Kingdom is seeking to use boat racing sport to champion public health awareness and HIV/AIDs prevention campaigns among the kingdom subjects.

The plan was unveiled by Henry Ssekabembe Kiberu, the Minister in charge of Youth, Sports and Recreation in the Buganda Kingdom.

He says that the Kingdom will periodically organize boat regattas, through which, island communities will be engaged on matters of Public health and HIV/AIDS prevention. One such event is due to take place at Sand Beach Nabugabo in Masaka district this Saturday.

Sekabembe says that besides entertainment, the kingdom has found the sport an appropriate platform for mobilization and promoting public health practices among its subjects. He explains that as a UNAIDS Ambassador in combating HIV/AIDS campaign led by men, the Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, considered rejuvenating the spot as one of the ways to widen his mobilization scope to directly reach out to the most at-risk populations along the water shores.

The Kabaka will also continue presiding over similar events in Islands and on landing sites across Buganda where he will directly mobilize the target populations in fishing communities to improve their general hygiene, shun risky behaviour and protect the environment.
