The Medical Board is yet to discuss Mityana Municipality Member of Parliament Francis Zaake’s application to travel abroad for treatment.

This comes after reports indicated that the board had already allowed Zaake to travel abroad to the U.S for treatment following injuries that he sustained as a result of alleged torture during the chaos in Arua.

Emmanuel Ainebyoona, Senior Public Relations Officer Ministry of Health says that the medical board received Zaake’s application to go abroad for treatment on Wednesday.

The board is made up of 12 senior doctors that are consultants in their respective fields.

Ainebyoona explains that Zaake’s treatment abroad will depend on the recommendations from the board to avoid unnecessary travel.

Zaake has been hospitalized for two weeks.

Last week, Dr. Andrew Sekitoleko, Chief Executive Officer Rubaga Hospital wrote to the Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga asking for permission for Zaake to travel abroad for further treatment.

According to doctors from Lubaga hospital, the Mityana municipality representative is suffering from spinal, back and neck injuries. Ainebyoona says that the medical board will have to ascertain these injuries.

Meanwhile, Criminal Investigations and Intelligence Department (CIID) Director, Grace Akullo has met the Lubaga Hospital Administrator over the status of  Zaake.

The meeting comes against the backdrop of reports that Police had written a letter demanding the transfer of the bedridden MP from Lubaga to Mulago hospital.

Akullo alongside the Director Police Health Services, Dr. Moses Byaruhanga met the Lubaga Hospital Executive Director Dr. Andrew Ssekitooleko amid tension triggered by the alleged letter.

Police however denied being the source of the letter amidst plans by the legislator’s family to fly him abroad for specialized treatment.

After the meeting with the hospital administrator, Akullo declined to speak to journalists telling them to get information from the hospital administrator.

Kampala Woman MP Nabilah Naggayi Ssempala who is also a member of the Human Rights Committee said that it would be a violation of human rights for police to force the transfer of MP Zaake to any other hospital that is not of his interest.
