Several mobile money shops in Luweero and Wobulenzi town councils are under lock and key as part of the protest against the one percent levy on mobile money transactions.
Government slapped a one percent levy on each mobile money transaction effective July 1, 2018.
The tax has seen a reduction in mobile transactions drawing protests from mobile agents.
Today several mobile money agents in Luweero and Wobulenzi town council decided not to open their shops demanding that parliament rescinds the tax on mobile money transactions.
Musa Ssewanyana, the Chairperson of Luweero Mobile Money Agents Association, says prior to the introduction of the mobile money tax, they would receive between 30-50 clients each day but the number have drastically reduced to about ten clients.
