Police and other security agencies will deploy over 7,000 personnel in and around Uganda martyrs Shrine Namugongo ahead of martyrs’ day celebrations this weekend.

The number was arrived at during a meeting of the Joint Operations Committee.

The officers will be from different police stations in Kampala, Wakiso, Mukono and Mpigi districts. Others will be picked from the Field Force, Traffic and Counter terrorism police.

Moses Kafeero, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Commander Moses Kafeero Kabugo, refused to reveal the total number of personnel who will be deployed inside the ground. He says that the number depends on the demand.

There will also be aerial surveillance from drones, helicopters and balloons, whose feeds will be read at the Information Technology (IT) command center.

Kafeero, says that Kira Division Police is in charge of the security of the venue.

Organizers of this year’s Marty’s day celebrations expect more than 4,000 people from different countries. Pilgrims began arriving in Namugongo as early as last week and many more are still arriving.

Tororo Archdiocese is leading this year’s celebrations for the Roman Catholic Shrine while Greater Kigezi Diocese will be leading the celebrations at the Anglican Shrine.
