The Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Hon. Winnie Kizza says they are to embark on a new campaign where they will consult their electorate on what move to take after the House approved a constitutional change that will allow the current president to run for an unprecedented sixth term in office.

Speaking at Parliament on Thursday, Hon. Kiiza who represents Kasese District said they were embarking  on the Kogikuteko campaign and commended a section of MPs for the engagements they made during consultations on the just passed bill.

“We are starting another journey called Kogikutteko,” revealed LOP Winnie Kiiza in the aftermath of three tense days of debate, MPs voted overwhelmingly to remove the age limit of 75 for presidential candidates..

“We are mandated to come up with laws that will that will provide proper management of the country. Government should accept that they have run away from their responsibilty,” she added.

“Some of us have gone to the East African Court of Justice to report how the process is being conducted.”

The East African Court of Justice is a treaty-based judicial body of the East African Community tasked to ensure adherence to law in the interpretation and application of and compliance with the East African Community Treaty of 1999.

Now, 73-year-old President Yoweri Museveni, who has ruled for more than 30 years, can seek re-election in 2021 or 2023.

A two-term limit was scrapped in 2005 to allow Mr Museveni to stand for a third term.

But that limit has been reinstated following criticism that Mr Museveni could now become president for life.

His supporters argue that Ugandans can always vote him out of power.

“I legislators who looked beyond political parties, interests and Mr. Museveni and put Ugandans first,” Hon. Kiiza said.

“I know that other Ugandans will go to court in regards to this issue.”
