Enterprising midfielder Tadeo Lwanga has insisted that last season it was not his goal to be nominated for the 2017 FUFA Male player of the year but to have the ‘best possible season’ for then employers SC Villa.
Now at Vipers SC, Lwanga has built on his brilliant year in as far as performance on the pitch is concerned. The 23-year-old was integral to the Blues finishing second in the Uganda Premier League after a string of impressive performances, especially towards the end of the campaign.
For the first time ever, his role in the side has put him amongst some of the best players in the region and on Thursday he was nominated for the 2017 awards set for December 01 at Speke Resort, Munyonyo.
The former SC Villa captain is joined on the three-man list for the 2017 prestigious award by Cranes striker Geoffrey Sserunkuma (now at Buildcon, Zambia ) and KCCA’s Muzamir Mutyaba.
But Lwanga insisted that his top performances were not for personal gain, but for the good of the team.
“I did not play like that while focusing on being nominated for the award. Last season I did everything possible for the team and finishing second in the league was a team effort,” Lwanga said on Friday.
“Now, my focus is on helping my current club Vipers do better.”
The Kitende club said on their official website that upon getting the information about his nomination, Lwanga indicated he is delighted that his efforts are recognised.
“It is unbelievable, but always someone who works hard has to be appreciated. God is good all the time,” he said.
Lwanga will be seeking to replicate what Farouk Miya( formerly at Vipers) did when he was crowned the player of the year in 2015.
Dennis Mbidde, organizing committee chairperson said sponsors Airtel like last season have offered shs100m for the event while Round Bob managing director David Gonahasa announced a $5000 sponsorship for the two MVP winners (Male and Female) to facilitate their travel expenses to Dubai.
This year’s winners will also walk away with cars.
