IGP Kayihura sets conditions for his retirement

Well into his fifth term, Uganda’s chief of Police Gen Kale Kayihura has said he will only consider stepping down as the he Inspector General of police when  there is peace in Uganda.

The 61-year-old made the procliamation while addressing students from various institutions of learning under their umbrella body ‘Uganda National Students Association (UNSA) at Nkumba University over the weekend.

“I will not retire in Uganda as long as there are still some people disturbing us,” Gen. Kayihura said.

“If you want me to retire, keep the peace which many people of Uganda, our grandfathers, fathers, mothers and brothers sacrificed for. Nobody should play around. If anybody is planning to burn the city, I’m still around,” he added.

Kayihura has been police chief since 2005 after taking over from Gen. Katumba Wamala which makes him Uganda’s longest serving police chief.

However, a wave of criminal activities in different parts of the country has put Kayihura on the spot as police struggle to keep crime in check.

Disquiet about increasing levels of crime recently reached a crescendo following the grisly murder of Assistant Inspector of Police, Felix Kaweesi, in broad day light by gun wielding assailants riding on motor cycles.
