Inflation rose slightly in September 2017 to 5.3 percent from 5.2 percent in August, according to the Consumer Price Index released this morning by the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS).
Vincent Musoke Nsubuga, a principal statistician at UBOS says the increase in inflation was driven by services inflation which rose from 3.3 percent in August to 4.1 percent in September.
Nsubuga says increase in services inflation was on account of increase in monthly taxi fees from 42,000 Shillings to 105,000 Shillings. He says parking fees also jumped from 500 Shillings to 1,000 Shillings per hour in areas under the jurisdiction of Kampala Capital City Authority.
However, food inflation declined to 9.6 percent in September from 11.7 percent in August, driven by decline in prices of fruits. Nsubuga says despite the decline in food inflation, food prices generally continue to remain high.
Inflation by income groups and geographical areas saw Arua register the highest inflation at 9.0 percent, followed by Fort Portal at 8.9 percent and Gulu at 8.8 percent. Kampala registered the lowest inflation at 3.5 percent, followed by Jinja at 3.6 percent and Mbarara at 4.9 percent.
