A copy of today’s (Sept 26) Parliament order paper shows presidential #agelimit debate is not among the items to be discussedahead of the anticipated motion for a constitutional amendment to lift the cap on the presidential age limit
However, the order paper can be adjusted after consultations with the Speaker of Parliament.
But media this morning observe presence of heavy police and military deployment around the August House. The deployment comes amid mobilization by various political groups and civil society organizations, challenging the planned amendment of the constitution to lift the presidential age, now capped at 75. The motion for the amendment is expected today after a failed attempt last Thursday.
Police Spokesperson Asan Kasingye on Monday insisted that the police would deploy in the city to ward off any threats. There is equally visible deployment at a number of strategic locations in the central business district.
Military police have deployed also heavily at the Constitution Square where they have also erected several tents and at parliament, the centre of all political action for the day.
Workers, pupils, students, traders and other commuters are, however, going about normally. Traffic flow is also still normal, but a bit lighter than on a typical working day but not for long.
