PICS: Minister nabs thieving nurses during ‘unannounced’ visit to Naguru Hospital

Two health workers, according to a statement by the Health Ministry, were arrested when the attempted to solicit a bribe from the veiled “patient.”

With Uganda’s much-publicized boxing corrupt in government offices and facilities, State Minister for Health for General Duties, Hon. Sarah Opendi took some time away from her busy schedule on Friday to brighten up the days of the sick and their relatives alike at China- Naguru Hospital in the capital Kampala.

According to one Juliet Masaba, Hon. Opendi arrived at the facility “unannounced” and proceeded to walk to the reception dressed up in a burka (Muslim attire) in order to investigate reports of alleged corruption.

The minister who rode on a boda boda bike was shocked when a laboratory technician and a nursing assistant attempted to solicit a bribe from her in exchange for treatment.

“It was the lift that my family and everyone in the hospital needed,” narrated Ms. Masaba, who also shared the information that she had a patient at Naguru and they had been charged a lot of money yet  services in Government Health Facilities are meant to be free of charge and no patient should be charged any shilling unless they are in the Private wing.

State Minister for Health for General Duties, Hon. Sarah Opendi on Friday disguised herself and rode on a boda boda before she a couple of corrupt medical officers at Naguru Hospital.
Two health workers, according to a statement by the Health Ministry, were arrested when the attempted to solicit a bribe from the veiled “patient.”

Vivian Nakalika Sserwanja, spokesperson of the ministry of health told TheUgandan that the two medical officers were immediately arrested were arrested by the Minister and Health Monitoring Unit for charging the Minister and other patient’s illicit amounts of money for services meant to be given free to the public.

The matter is now before Uganda Police to be charged according to the law.
