Cabinet votes to scrap age limit cap

Uganda’s Cabinet has today (Friday) voted to push through the amendment of Article 102(b) of the constitution to lift the Presidential age limit.

TheUgandan understands that Hon. Frank Tumwebaze, the Minister of Information Technology and Communications in the Cabinet of Uganda is preparing to make an official announcement.

Article 102(b) of the constitution provides that a person is not qualified for election as president unless that person is not less than thirty-five years and not more than seventy-five years of age. President Museveni, who has been in power since 1986, is ineligible to stand for re-election in 2021 when his current term expires because he will be 77 years old, two years older than the mandatory 75.

Museveni has not declared his intentions to run for another term but the move by his loyal cabinet and NRM parliamentary majority to lift 75 year age limit will allow him to reign for another term. The group vowed to unconditionally support and defend the removal of presidential age limits saying the country really needs President Museveni.
