This old adage holds true mostly when battle lines are drawn. On the political arena, it is a factual description of the President Yoweri Museveni’s relationship with some of his party Members of Parliament for a while now.
The eight include Theodore Ssekikubo (Lwemiyaga), Muhammad Nsereko (Kampala Central), Barnabas Tinkasimire (Buyaga West), Felix Okot Ogong (Dokolo South) Wilfred Niwagaba (Ndorwa East), and John Baptist Nambetsye (Manjiya County), among others.
They have Tuesday started a campaign which seeks to counteract efforts by NRM legislators who overwhelmingly agreed to start a process for the amendment of article 102 (b) of the Constitution which caps the presidential age at 75. At least 245 MPs endorsed a proposal for a Private Members Bill seeking to open this up.
According to them, the move was guised as a private members Bill but it is part of a grand scheme to allow President Yoweri Museveni seek re-election in 2021 when he will be 77 years.
Niwagaba described the Tuesday events as President Museveni’s machinations that should be resisted by Ugandans the way the proposed amendment of article 26 on land was resisted.
