The Lions Club of Kampala Central club in partnership with FOL Logistics producers of the Kingdom Rice brand have organised three eye medical camps starting next month.
This year’s $40,000 contribution will facilitate 1,000 cataract operations (screening and treatment) during the three medical camps at Kololo Airstrip (22nd October), Mparo Kabale (25-27th October) and Nwoya (24- 26th November). On 22nd October, there will be a marathon titled Run for Sight aimed at creating awareness and momentum towards the eye medical camps
According to a statement from the Marathon Convener, Dr. Lawrence Mugisha, this year, three cataract surgery camps have been planned to provide free cataract surgery to people blinded by cataracts in five regions of Uganda. Five sight screening camps are planned for school-going children to screen and detect visual impairments early. A total of 1,000 cataracts shall be operated at a rate of $60. This is expected to cost up to UgShs150, 000,000 (Uganda Shillings one hundred and fifty million).
“Over 500,000 people in Uganda are blind because of cataracts. The challenge is that most blind people are poor, and can neither afford the treatment nor access it,” Dr. Mugisha said.
At hotel Africana in Kampala on Tuesday on the sidelines of the Club members thanked Gervase Ndyanabo for his effective resource mobilization skills that brought FOL Logistics on board. Club President Asiimwe urged other companies to emulate FOL Logistics to have strong CSR programs to aid the financially vulnerable.
