Despite the frantic efforts to talk Judicial officers into calling off their strike, Local Government workers have also threatening the possibility of industrial action if President Museveni’s government does not increase their salaries.
This will be biggest dispute in the civil service for more than a decade to escalate after tens of thousands of workers backed strikes in a dispute over pay.
“This is to remain you of 90 days’ Notice to strike by the Local Government Workers Union as a way of protesting descrimination in treatment of Government which is unconstitutional and illegal,” Hassan Lwabayi, the Head of the Public Service, said in their letter to the Prime Minister, Ruhakana Rugunda.
The workers cite the ‘discriminating’ higher pay to fellow government workers in Bank of Uganda (BOU) governor who receives Shs50m, Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) commissioner general who gets Shs40m, and Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) executive director who is paid Shs43m.
The Union said government has not responded to their petition to the Public Service Negotiating Council.
“That the minimum salary i.e U8 [Lower] was proposed to be raised from Shs187,660 to Shs1.7m per month.”
