Gen. Muntu battles ‘Besigye candidate Amuriat’, 4 others for FDC presidency

A two-day party presidential nomination exercise to pick the new president of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has kicked off today Monday with fanfare.

Maj. Gen. Mugisha Muntu nominated on Monday, is seeking a second term at the helm of the leading opposition party in Uganda but faces competition from Dan Matsiko from Bushenyi, Byamugisha Moses also nominated today in Rukungiri district, Bakubi Lukubira Moses of Mukono district, Patrick Amuriat Oboi from Kumi and MP Munyagwa Mubarack.

Immediately after his nomination, Gen Muntu, 58, is addressing a public rally at Jokas hotel field in Bweyogerere, organized by the chairman of his nomination team, Kira Municipality MP Ssemujju Ibrahim Nganda.

Their camp’s biggest opponent is Amuriat is the defiance cabinet’s minister for Lands and is believed to be easier to deal with than the unflinching reigning president Muntu.

Amuriat is heavily supported by Dr. Kizza Besigye diehards; secretary general Nathan Nandala-Mafabi, his deputy Harold Kaija, treasurer Geoffrey Ekanya and his deputy Wilberforce Kyambadde and secretary for mobilization Ingrid Turinawe.

Campaigns are expected to kick off on August 17 while voting by about 1,500 delegates will be held on November 17.
