MP Kakooza gets death threats over supporting age-limit

Kabula County MP James Kakoza has begged the speaker of Parliament, Hon. Rebecca Kadaga to guarantee his and other ruling party, NRM legislators’ safety with a section of Ugandans intimidating and threatening those presumably advocating for amendment of the constitution to lift the 75 presidential age limit cap.

In 2006, Mr. Yower Museveni was given another shot at the presidency because MP Kakooza led the campaign that saw the 7th Parliament lift the presidential term limit from the constitution.

“Some of us (NRM legislators) have been receiving threatening phone calls and text messages on our mobile phones urging us not to lift the age limit or face consequences,” Kakooza said at Parliament on Monday as supporters of the move within parliament and outside continue to drum up support for the proposed amendment.

“We know of youth groups that have been promised money to get involved in these cowardly acts but it is not necessary.  This is not the essence of democracy, we shall not hesitate taking legal action against them,” said Kakooza  who besides scrapping of the 75 age cap, also wants political space to be opened for even the young ones below 18 years.

Speaker Kadaga last week barred MPs from engaging in the ‘age limit’ debate.
