Rotary International President Elect of Sam Frobisher Owori has died in a hospital in the United States while undergoing surgery on his leg.

A member of Rotary Club Uganda for close to 40 years, Owori died in Dallas, Texas on Friday, his family said.

During the ill-fated operation, his blood pressure dropped suddenly and he never made it through.

A great man

Born 75 years ago, Mr Owori joined Rotary in 1978 and has served in different capacities including District Governor and director and trustee.

He served as the executive director of the African Development Bank, managing director of Uganda Commercial Bank Ltd and director of Uganda Development Bank (UDB) prior to his current position of chief executive officer of the Institute of Corporate Governance of Uganda (ICGU).

He studied law, employment relations, business management, corporate resources management, microfinance, and marketing at institutions in England, Japan, Switzerland, Tanzania, and the US, including Harvard Business School.

Sam Owori welcomed last August home by Rotarians at Entebbe International Airport. The celebrated Banker has died.

Most recently, Mr Owori served as trustee of The Rotary Foundation, chair of The Rotary Foundation’s finance committee, and a member of the Investment Committee.Since he served as district governor, the number of clubs in Uganda has swelled from nine to 89.

Rotary International is a non-profit organisation involved in combatting hunger, improving health and sanitation, promoting peace and the eradication of polio worldwide.
