Shs88.2b PENSION SCAM: Lwamafa remains in Luzira even after being granted bail by Justice Kavuma
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Justice Steven Kavuma has Wednesday granted bail to Jimmy Lwamafa, the former Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Public Service who was convicted of embezzling Shs88.2b of pension money.

Christopher Obey (ex-principal accountant in pensions department) was also released but the fate of Stephen Kiwanuka Kunsa (ex-director, research and development) is not yet decided.

However, Mr. Lwamafa will stay in jail as he is yet to secure bail with another case in the Anti-Corruption Court.

On March 27th, 2017 the State suggested to Justice Kavuma that should he wish to grant them bail, they should collectively be bonded by a whopping sum of Shs15b in cash.

In explaining the mode of paying the Shs15b bail money, Mr Tom Walugembe, on behalf of the State, told court that Lwamafa pays Shs2b, Kunsa Shs3b and Obey Shs10b.

It was not clear by presstime on which terms Justice Kavuma released Obey and Lwamafa.

Whatever the eventual verdict, the case is likely to go through a series of appeals before its conclusion.

Former Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Public Services Jimmy Lwamafa (2nd right/seated) and ex- principal accountant in pensions department Christopher Obey have on Wednesday been granted bail.
