Mathias Lukwago, the first president of Uganda Cycling Federetion (UCF), has joined a charity drive to save former Express defender Vincent Onyebuki, donating $100 (equivalent to Shs360,000) as football fans solicit for Shs20 million to treat him at CoRSU, a renowned rehabilitation hospital in Kisubi.
UCF publicist Fredrick Kalyango told TheUgandan that Mr. Lukwago, who also works with Trees for the Future, a US-based Non-Governmental Organisation, like other well-wishers had heeded to the compassionate work of Hamza Jjunju one of the initiators of the “save Onyebuki” project. He handed the money to Express PRO Denis Katumba on Monday at the Equatorial Mall based offices of UCF.
Onyebuki broke his leg playing for the club in a league game against Proline on May 09. He was not properly treated for almost two months by at Mengo Hospital and Lisa Medical Centre owned by Express FC club chairperson Florence Nakiwala also Minister of State for Youth and Children affairs.
Almost two weeks ago, doctors advised the Nigerian defender who signed for the club in January on a short contract until the end of last season to give up on any hopes of playing competitive football.
Minister Nakiwala has faced alot of stick for publically stating publicly that the club would not continue looking after the player.
