At least 300 swimmers across East Africa have confirmed participation at the third edition of the Seals Invitation swimming gala, which started today, (Thursday, 6 July) at Kampala Parents School.
This was confirmed by the Seals Swim Club president, Tefiro Sserunjogi.
“This gala has attracted almost 300 swimmers from clubs in Kenya and Uganda, which is 30% more swimmers than last year. In Uganda, Baseline, Dolphins, Gliders, Makerere University, Seagulls Swim Club, Shark Teens, Uganda Christian University and Seals Swim Club Kampala have confirmed attendance,” said Sserunjogi.
“We also have a number of independent entries from Kenya; Makini and PIPSA. We expect new records to be made by the swimmers showing the progress made since July 2016,” he added.
Centenary Bank has given the championship a shot in the arm with a cash kitty of shs30 Million to help the club successfully organize the event.
Beatrice Lugalambi, the general manager Business Development, Centenary bank, said, “Besides the fact that swimming is an important skill to have in life, the bank is a strong supporter of harnessing the youth’s talent in order to build a more productive society.”
“We want the youth to know who Centenary bank is.This is one of the ways the bank reaches out to the youth to offer financial literacy. We educate them about finance planning as well as long term plans of investment,” Lugalambi added.
Dolphins and Seals swim clubs tied for the first position last year with 905 points each while Otters Swim Club from Kenya took third place with 123 points.
A medal ceremony shall be held each afternoon to award the day’s winners. The trophies and winners shall be awarded at the end of day on Sunday, 9 July 2017.
