The hotly contested Makerere University Vice Chancellor Search has finally picked a candidate to head Uganda’s oldest tertiary institution.
Reports indicate that the University’s Vice Chancellor Search Committee this afternoon zeroed on Prof Barnabas Nawangwe as the university’s new Vice Chancellor ahead of the two contenders Prof Venansious Baryamureeba and Prof Edward Kirumira.
Front runner Barnabas Nawangwe got 77%, Edward Kirumira garnered 70% while former presidential candidate Venansius Baryamureeba only got 64% of the Makerere University Vice Chancellor search committee 26-member vote.
The Search Committee report is tomorrow expected to be tabled before the University Council which will make the final verdict being the highest decision making body at a public university. The criteria is established by the University and other Tertiary Institutions Act.
Born in 1956, the 61-year old Professor Nawangwe is the current Vice Chancellor of Makerere University in charge of Finance and Administration, having risen to that position five years ago. Previously, he served as the founding Principal of the College of Engineering Design, Art and Technology (CEDAT), at the introduction of the collegiate system at Makerere University.
To his credit are more than 40 new university policies, including policies on governance, financial management, human resource management, teaching and learning and student affairs.
Nawangwe is full professor of architecture and currently the only full professor of architecture in Africa.
