If It’s Laughter You’re After, on 7th July, Theatre Labonita will be packed with comedy and merrymaking, writes Stephen Muneza Kagabo.
Comic duo MadRat real name Dickson Lubega and Chiko real name Frank Mubiru have been best buddies since meeting as children in Makindye, Kampala and during Primary school in St Kizito Junior School and Nabuti Primary School in Mukono. Since then, they have become prolific “Lugaternetainers,” radio presenter/deejays, actors, and businessmen with Madrat owning a boutique on the building with Satelite Beach in Mukono and Chiko having of the biggest movie libraries in Mukono.
The Mukono duo yesterday announced they were set to hold a two- hour long one-man (ofcourse they are two) NsekoBuseko show which is expected to be shown live by BBS Terefayina and will kickstart their national tour also penciled for next month.
“Growing up in Makindye and Mukono, we had little money and struggled in poverty for years but now that we have successful careers in comedy; we want to invite you to our first big show where part of the proceeds will go to charity,” Chiko said in the NsekoBuseko press conference at Silver Springs Hotel in Bugolobi in the presence of sponsors’ representatives Denis Lwanga from Nile Breweries, Mutebi Paul of SwanAir and Kembabazi Jackie of Worldstar Betting.
“We have identified an orphanage in Mukono called Hand in Hand Children’s Home behind Colline Hotel. These youngsters deserve a chance and that is why we would like all our fans to come and support us because this cause is timely for the poor kids,” MadRat added.
They said stand up comedy lovers should brace themselves for a day filled with hilarity.
“This show is going to be a trendsetter to the other comedy shows,” … Chiko says before Madrat jumped in … “We are going to be on stage for two hours and besides that, we are planning on having a request session where we shall give the audience a chance to ask us for their best skits. There won’t be anyone else on stage apart from us.”
Nationwide comedy tour
The management team, Pixel Media Uganda’s Andrew Kyamagero said the national tour would begin in Kampala and take them to at least 6 top towns including Jinja, Mbarara, Mukono, Masaka, Fort Portal and Mbale
“MadRat and Chiko will go to the Theatre Labonita in Kampala and crack your ribs, then we will kick start my tour at Laftaz Dams Water Jinja, then Thatch Gardens Mbale, Maria Flo in Masaka, Satelite Beach Mukono, The Cave Mbarara and we will finish our tour in Fort Portal for our good people, in the town with the most beautiful women,” said Kyamagero.
He added that people should support the local talent that they have at their disposal.
“We want to give these boys the entrance that has not been there before. These boys have clean comedy, their content is organic. MadRat and Chiko is a remarkable duo. Like Radio&Weasal, one has a high pitch and the other a dynamic one,” Kyamagero said.
“Doing a country tour, we want to take the show far beyond, tap into new talent and help them come to Kampala to help them fulfill their potential.”
This was a show ideally suited to all generations because much of the humour is reminiscent of what has been happening in the news but put across by a couple of genuinely funny men, who are both clearly proud of their Buganda roots.
“Madrat and Chiko are going to do clean and fresh content where someone can come with their parents, children and grandparents without expecting anything vulgar,” Kyamagero said.
