Uganda side Kampala Capital City Authority Football Club (KCCA FC) are in Nigeria for today’s CAF Confederation Cup Group A tie against Rivers United.
The Azam Uganda League champions who also beat Paidha Black Angels FC 2-0 to win the Uganda Cup on Thursday before leaving for Nigerai over the weekend are very confident that they can get a good result in Nigeria.
This is the fourth for both teams in the competition and a win for KCCA FC will brighten the side’s chances of making the knockout stages.
Their skipper Denis Okot says they are aiming at picking their maiden point away from home.
“We need to play for a result, a draw would be good enough for us but if a win came then we will celebrate it more and build on that,” Okot told the club website before revealing what with be needed for KCCA FC to leave Nigeria with a result they want
“We must find the back of the net, we can crest chances our strikers can score goals, a goal can turn things around for us.”
Okot also revealed that defensive discipline will be key for the side, something they have not managed in the three games of Group stages. “Much as we want to to score goals, it’s key for us to keep a clean sheet, I know it will be hard but we must try as a team to frustrate the attacks of Rivers United.”
In their last game KCCA FC beat Rivers United FC 2-1 at their Philip Omondi Stadium in Kampala. The win pushed them to second in the group behind Morocco’s FUS Rabat. Mutebi said that his boys are well motivated to get a good result in Nigeria.
The players are looking at this game as a final because it means a lot for them if they hope to advance. “We have been winning games at home and now need to get some points away from home,” added the skipper.
KCCA FC will look to their leading 34-year striker Geoffrey Sserunkuma and Derrick Nsibambi who have been in scoring form lately. The duo netted in the Uganda Cup final played in Arua District. “I am very hungry to score goals that will see KCCA Fc get to the final of the Confederations Cup,” said Sserunkuma.
While KCCA FC are motivated going into the match, their opponents lost their last League game 1-0 to Lobi Stars FC on Friday to remain in a miserable 15th place.
Geoffrey Serunkuuma has also scored four times for KCCA FC in the CAF Champions League, although he is yet to find the back of the net on the continent.
