Scores of innocent pedestrians were killed countrywide last month in recorded accidents, Uganda Police’s traffic department says.
The Traffic Police spokesperson, Charles Sembambulidde attributed the accidents to motorists who do not respect the right of way of pedestrians and road signs, especially in the Kampala Metropolitan Police area – drivers claim the signage is in English.
In the past six weeks, a total of 1,153 accidents were registered. In May, out of the 877 accident victims, 170 were killed, the majority being male in accidents that occur between 4.00pm and 9.00pm in the districts of Kampala and Wakiso.
Sembambulidde said “Pedestrians topped the list with 73 victims killed in accidents, followed by boda boda cyclists 43, passengers 36, pedal cyclists 10 and eight drivers.”
Between 80 and 100 accident victims were to Mulago Hospital’s orthopedics department, Senior orthopedic consultant, Dr. Tito Beyeza said.
